If like us, your summer holiday abroad has been scuppered by COVID-19, chances are you’re planning to hit the road for a good old-fashioned UK based holiday. If it’s been a while since your vehicle took a cross-country journey, below are a few tips and tricks to make sure that you’re road ready and you get to your holiday destination without any vehicle mishaps.
Get your air con in working order
The last thing you’ll want is to be stuck in traffic in the blazing heat and your car’s air conditioning breaks down. Just like any other part of your car, the air con will need maintenance once in a while to ensure that it’s ready to keep you cool when you need it.
Most commonly, it will need regassing. Signs that your air con needs regassing include it not blowing as cold as it should, or stopping working completely.
If you’re feeling confident, you can give regassing your air con a go yourself and buy a regassing kit online for around £40. Alternatively, feel free to visit Rangers Garage and we can get this sorted for you in no time at all.
Refill the coolant
It should be no surprise that keeping your engine cool whilst you’re on a long journey is vital – especially in the summer heat. After all, if it does overheat you could end up wasting precious hours of your holiday waiting for a breakdown service to arrive.
You can check your engine coolant levels by following the instructions in your vehicle manual, but please remember to always let your engine completely cool down before you check it to avoid a potential burn. If the level has fallen below (or close to) the minimum levels marked on the tank, top it up with coolant before you drive anywhere.
If you notice any rust, or if it has been a while since you had the coolant completely drained and replaced, you should prioritise this. We’d be happy to help or even just to offer some advice, just call our friendly team on 01980 65-55-55.
Make the switch to summer tyres
Did you know that in some countries it’s a legal requirement to have different summer and winter tyres for your car? Although that’s not the case here in the UK, many vehicle owners will still periodically switch between winter and summer tyres that are optimised for the different weather conditions you’re likely to encounter.
Typically, winter tyres come off when temperatures climb over 7°C, saving them for the more tricky to navigate ice, sleet or snow. However, if you haven’t driven your car much in the last few months because of lockdown, you may wish to make the switch to summer tyres before you hit the road for your holiday.
If you’re planning to take your first proper road trip and have previously been using the same tyres all year round, now may be the time to explore your different tyre options. At Rangers Garage in Salisbury, we offer a great range of tyres at the best internet prices. We’ll also give you unbiased advice on the best tyre for your requirements. Check the basics
We know your mind might already be focussed on all of the holiday activities you have planned, but it’s important to not lose sight of the basic car checks that you should complete before any significant journey. These include:
- Checking your oil
- Checking your wiper fluid levels, and wipers for any sign of wear and tear
- Check your tyre tread levels and pressure
- Check your battery
- Make sure your gas tank is full!
For more information on how to complete these checks yourself, read our article – How to complete a car safety check at home.

If it’s been a while since your car has been used or since its last service, your safest bet is to book it in for a car service at a garage. Most cars should have a major and minor car service six months apart, so if you’ve fallen behind on this schedule, now’s the time to get it booked in.
