Car repairs in Salisbury: the good, the bad and the ugly

Necessary car repairs always seem to come at the worst of times; just before payday, at the start of a pricey month, or just when you’re thinking about changing your car up. Quite frankly, car repairs in Salisbury are something everyone tries to avoid.

Unfortunately, some bumps and scrapes are just not worth ignoring and can lead to bigger, more expensive problems in the future. From our 100+ years of experience, we have a pretty good understanding of car repairs, so in this article, we outline, the good, the bad and damn right ugly.

The good.

Yes, we know we shouldn’t label any car repair as a good car repair, but these are a few that are easy for people to avoid and yet simple enough to get fixed. You may even be able to do them yourself if you pop the bonnet and know what you’re doing.

We are not talking about changing your oil, or replacing your headlight (although, in some newer cars, we do agree this is a nightmare!), we are talking about those slightly more complex ones, but with the help of a wrench, you will be done in a no time.

Replacing your car battery

If there is one thing we wouldn’t recommend, its paying Halfords £25 to change your battery. It’s a complete waste of your money and is a super easy car repair to do yourself. If you know your car battery is at the end of its life, or you’ve been using the same one for more than 4 years, it’s time to change it up.

Follow these simple steps here, or a quick Google on ‘how to change a car battery’ and you will be well on your way after about 15 – 30 minutes.

If you are struggling, pop in to see us and we will be more than happy to help.

Bodywork touch-ups

We feel your pain, your car that is your pride and joy has been hit by a car door while you’ve been parked up, no apology note, nothing. But, all is not lost, if it’s nothing too bad then there are many rescue remedies that will restore your car back to its original form.

If you require bodywork touch-up, ask our team and we can recommend the best options and colour matches for your car. If you use the wrong stuff, it can sometimes come out looking worse, so be careful what you pick up.

The bad.

These are those repairs that you know you need to get done quickly and by a well-established car repairs garage (just like us!). They need a bit of expertise as if completed incorrectly, or on the cheap, they can have catastrophic outcomes.

Dashboard lights

Seeing a rainbow of colours come up on your dashboard? This isn’t a great sign, especially if you are looking at one or more red symbols – these indicate you need to stop the car as soon as you can in a safe place. Blue and green symbols are generally advisories to get looked at, some as simple as your oil running low.

Seeing a red dashboard light will usually indicate one of the following:

  • Oil pressure warning light – indicated with what looks like a watering can, the oil pressure light can be a huge expense if left, it usually means you have a faulty or leaking oil pump, so not enough (or too much) oil is getting to the engine.
  • Brake warning light – this will be a small exclamation mark symbol and is vital that you get fixed immediately, let’s be honest, no ones wants a problem with their brakes!

The ugly.

These are those car repairs that we don’t see all too often but are usually the signs of an unfortunate car accident leading to a near write-off, but we do bring them back, and try to do it as cost effective for you as possible.

Be warned, many garages will bump up the cost of these types of car repairs in Salisbury. Knowing that you won’t know any different, they’ll charge you for repairs your car doesn’t need. Do your research and get our opinion.

Air conditioners, airbags, and other internal issues

After a car accident, the majority of write-offs are down to internal damage under the bonnet, as opposed to physical bodywork, sometimes this can look completely intact in fact. These internal problems can lead to leaks and further damage to the rest of the car and engine.

If you have been involved in a major car accident, it’s important that your car is completely checked over for these potential issues, including your airbags and air conditioning. We will ensure that it’s 100% back to its original self, and be sure that any faulty components are replaced.
